Promoting Indigenous Tree Species for Timber Industries in Rwanda – an industry-academia partnership. We are also partnering with the Rwanda Forestry Authority and exploring the triple helix model for this project.

  • It is a collaborative research project between UR and Industry (SEAL).

Biodiversity Beers and Bag of Crisps(5Bs) (INNOVATION) – a collaboration between industry and academia to explore plants and potential for added value in beverages and foods in Rwanda. 90,000,000 Frw grant funded by NCST; 2-year project, 2022-2024

One Child One Tree – a project to bring nature closer to people by helping school children plant native trees in their schools and communities. Collaboration with colleagues in College of Medicine and Health Science and Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Agency.

Climate change and covid19 project

  • Multidisciplinary project with international universities that is investigating the interrelationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and climate resilience
  • Glasgow Caledonian University, Mzuzu University in Malawi and University of Rwanda are partners in this project
  • 2 years project 2020-2022 funded by GCRF through GCU

African Biodiversity Challenge project

  • Collaborative research with South African Biodiversity Institute
  • We are producing biodiversity data products such as spatial products and ecosystem type map.
  • $10,000 for 1st phase and $15,000 for second phase, funded by JRS Biodiversity Foundation Through SANBI

Climate smart agriculture project

  • Collaborative project with ICRAF and Rwanda Agriculture Board.
  • It is aimed at promoting climate smart agriculture in Kayonza, Kicukiro, Gatsibo and Nyagatare Districts of Rwanda.
  • 800,000 USD, funded by AfDB for 2 years, 2022-2024.

Unlocking Resilient Benefits from African Water Resources

  • Multidisciplinary project with Rhodes University in South Africa, under the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA).
  • It is integrating biological indicators in water quality monitoring, promoting adaptive planning and documenting ecosystem services provided by Akagera River and its Wetlands. 
  • It is a 3 years project, 2020-2023 with 69,000 GBP budget funded by UKRI.

Contribution of pollinating Diptera Flies to Crop Pollination in Small-Scale Agriculture in Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania

  • A collaborative project with other international institutions in Tanzania and Burundi
  • 500,000 USD grant funded by United Nations

Environmental DNA (eDNA) to Guide the Re-wilding Akagera National Park

  • Funded by National Geographic Society
  • Collaboration with UCLA researchers and African Parks, with participants from many different institutions in the research training in eDNA techniques
  • Total is 30,000 USD

Tackling the Climate Crisis in Rwanda: A Pump-Priming Project with Conservation Experts and Community Stakeholders

  • Collaboration with University of Glasgow, Scotland over 6 months; 20,000 GBP.

Biodiversity Summer Field School

  • Collaboration with Senkenberg Biodiversity Institute in Frankfurt, Germany
  • Goal is to train taxonomists in Rwanda and surrounding countries in species sampling, collection and identification, and collections management.
  • 245,082 EURO funded by VW Stiftung, 3 years training 2021-2023
